Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) at Quest Wellness Center is a goal-oriented, collaborative therapy that focuses on solutions and the future rather than analyzing the past. It helps you identify what already works in your life, picture the change you want, and take practical steps toward it in a short course of sessions. We offer it for addiction and mental health. We accept most commercial PPO plans with out-of-network benefits.

What SFBT is

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a goal-oriented, collaborative approach that concentrates on present and future problems rather than past experiences. Instead of analyzing how a problem developed, SFBT looks for systematic, practical ways to overcome current challenges, defining the issue and then searching for the objectives and solutions a client can actually practice in daily life. It is future-oriented and goal-directed, built around the idea that you do not have to fully understand a problem to move past it. That focus on workable solutions over root-cause analysis is what makes SFBT both brief and practical, and it is why the approach fits people who want momentum and concrete next steps rather than open-ended exploration.

How SFBT works

SFBT works by helping you find and build on skills you already have. Many people already possess abilities relevant to their situation, and the therapist’s job is to help you recognize and develop them rather than supply answers from the outside. Practitioners guide you through experimenting with new problem-solving methods by asking carefully worded questions, the main tool of this approach. A typical session involves picturing future scenarios in which the problem is no longer present, because you have put learned skills and past successes to work. By rehearsing what life looks like without the problem, you start to see the steps that get you there. Sessions stay practical and respectful, and because the work is targeted, change often comes in fewer sessions than longer-term therapies require.

SFBT techniques

SFBT is defined by a small set of signature techniques, all built around questions that shift attention from problems to solutions:

These techniques keep the work specific and forward-moving, and they are part of why SFBT can produce useful change quickly.

The core principles of SFBT

SFBT is guided by a handful of core principles that keep sessions practical and focused on what is working rather than what is broken. The foundational tenets are:

A central idea runs through all of them: the key to solving a problem often lies in the exceptions, the times the problem is not active. These principles help clients build confidence while reducing reliance on old patterns that no longer serve them.

A collaborative, client-led approach

SFBT treats the client as the expert on their own life, which sets it apart from traditional psychotherapy that often places the therapist in the expert role. It was developed in part as a response to that older model. In SFBT, client and therapist work as equals: the therapist brings the method and the questions, and you bring the knowledge of your own circumstances, and together you develop pragmatic solutions tailored to your needs. This partnership keeps the process respectful and brief, with actionable steps you can genuinely carry out. Leading your own recovery, rather than being handed a plan, is part of what makes the changes stick.

SFBT for addiction and mental health

SFBT fits addiction recovery and mental health treatment because it is practical, strengths-based, and built for momentum. For someone in early recovery, focusing on what is already working and on a clear picture of a life without the problem can be more motivating than dwelling on everything that went wrong. The approach helps clients become more mindful, present, confident, and motivated as they face future challenges, and it builds resilience by centering their own strengths. At Quest Wellness Center, SFBT is one part of a personalized plan that can address addiction, mental health concerns, or co-occurring challenges together, and it works alongside other therapies and our outpatient programs, in person or through secure telehealth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy?

SFBT is a goal-oriented, collaborative therapy that focuses on solutions and the future rather than analyzing the past. It helps you build on strengths you already have and take practical steps toward the change you want, usually in a short course of sessions.

SFBT follows a few core tenets: if it is not broken, do not fix it; seek exceptions, the times the problem is absent; use careful questions to drive progress; and create and negotiate the future. Together they keep sessions practical and forward-focused.

The signature techniques are the Miracle Question, which imagines the problem gone and describes what would change; scaling questions, which measure progress one to ten; and exception-finding, which identifies when the problem was absent so those moments can be repeated.

SFBT is future-focused and brief, where many therapies explore the past in depth. It treats you as the expert on your own life and works toward practical, achievable goals rather than open-ended analysis, which is why it often takes fewer sessions.

SFBT is designed to be brief and goal-directed, so it often works in fewer sessions than longer-term therapies. The exact length depends on your goals and progress, which your therapist reviews with you along the way.

Yes. Its practical, strengths-based focus suits recovery, helping clients build motivation and confidence by concentrating on what already works and on a clear picture of life without the problem.

Quest offers SFBT in person at our facility and through secure online sessions. Call (818) 275-9810 to find out whether it fits your goals.

It is delivered within our therapy and outpatient programs, so it generally follows your plan’s behavioral-health benefits. Quest accepts most commercial PPO plans with out-of-network benefits. Coverage and costs vary by plan, and we verify your benefits before treatment.

Where SFBT comes from

SFBT was developed in the late 1970s and 1980s by a group of clinicians led by Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer, and has since been detailed in a wide body of publications. By the 1990s it had spread well beyond the therapy room into schools, prisons, hospitals, residential treatment centers, nursing homes, and businesses, anywhere people work through everyday problems. Although SFBT is not built on a single theory, it draws on the early work of the Mental Research Institute of Palo Alto and on certain mindfulness-related concepts. That history matters because it shows the approach was shaped for real-world, practical use across many settings, including addiction treatment, rather than as an abstract framework.
