The Intensive Outpatient Program at Quest Wellness Center treats adults managing substance use, a mental health condition, or both, who need structure beyond weekly therapy but not 24-hour care. Sessions run 3 to 4 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week, with morning, afternoon, and evening tracks. We accept most commercial PPO plans with out-of-network benefits.

Who IOP is for

IOP is the right level of care for adults who are medically stable but need more support than a weekly therapy appointment provides. Most people reach our IOP one of two ways. Some step down from a Partial Hospitalization Program or residential treatment as they stabilize and are ready for fewer hours. Others step up from standard outpatient therapy when symptoms intensify and weekly sessions stop being enough. Common profiles include working professionals who need treatment around a job, parents and students balancing daily responsibilities, and people leaving a higher level of care who still want structure.

The program treats substance use and mental health conditions together, so co-occurring depression, anxiety, PTSD, and trauma are handled in the same plan as the addiction. IOP is not the right fit for anyone in an acute crisis, active withdrawal, or needing round-the-clock supervision, and our admissions team will help you reach a higher level of care if that is where you are right now.

What treatment looks like in our IOP

IOP at Quest runs 3 to 4 hours per session, 3 to 5 days a week, built around group therapy, individual therapy, and case management. Group work is the core of the program, and sessions rotate across several focused formats so clients build different skills each week. Individual therapy gives you private one-on-one time with a licensed clinician to process what surfaces in group and work on personal goals. Case management, grounded in clinical evidence, connects the therapeutic work to daily life, helping with the practical steps that keep recovery on track. You choose a morning, afternoon, or evening schedule, and the clinical content stays the same across all three. Length of stay is set by clinical progress rather than a fixed calendar.

A week in IOP combines several clinical groups with individual and case-management time. Group sessions move through psychoeducation, relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, and process-oriented work, so each meeting has a clear focus rather than repeating the same material. You also meet one-on-one with a licensed clinician to work on personal goals and review progress, and a case-management session helps you handle the practical side of recovery, from coordinating care to applying new skills at home and work. Because the program is offered both in person and virtually across California, you keep the same weekly structure whether you attend on site or from home. As you stabilize, the clinical team can step you down to our outpatient program or adjust your track without interrupting the continuity of care.

Group therapy formats

Group therapy at Quest is led by licensed professionals and structured around specific clinical goals rather than open-ended discussion. The formats include:

This range lets the clinical team match group work to what each client is actually working through, instead of running everyone through an identical track.

Therapies and modalities

Individual sessions and groups draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed practice. CBT targets the thought patterns that drive substance use and mood symptoms, giving clients concrete tools to interrupt them. DBT builds emotion-regulation and distress-tolerance skills for clients who struggle with intense emotions. Motivational Interviewing strengthens commitment to change at each stage of treatment. Trauma-informed groups, facilitated by skilled therapists, help clients who carry trauma symptoms alongside addiction build resilience through a strengths-focused approach rather than re-living the trauma. Medication management is available on site for clients whose treatment plan includes it.

Conditions we treat in IOP

Our IOP treats substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions together. Common focuses include:

In-person and virtual options

Quest Wellness Center delivers IOP both in person and virtually, so you can choose the format that fits your life. The facility offers private therapy rooms for one-on-one sessions and dedicated group areas for shared clinical work. Virtual IOP runs across California on secure platforms and follows the same clinical structure as on-site care, which makes it a fit for clients balancing rigid work schedules or living outside the immediate area. Both formats use the same evidence-based groups, individual therapy, and case management, and you can move between them if your circumstances change. Intensive outpatient programs in Los Angeles provide flexible treatment options for those seeking support without compromising their daily responsibilities. These programs are tailored to meet the diverse needs of the community, ensuring that individuals from all walks of life can access quality care.

Trauma-informed care in IOP

Many clients in IOP carry symptoms of trauma alongside substance use, so trauma-informed care runs through the program. Trauma-informed groups, led by highly trained therapists, use evidence-based interventions that help clients understand their symptoms and build resilience through a strengths-focused approach. The aim is to promote safety, collaboration, and stability by recognizing how trauma affects a person physically, psychologically, and socially, rather than treating substance use on its own. Addressing trauma alongside addiction reduces the risk of relapse driven by unresolved symptoms, which is part of why co-occurring depression, anxiety, and PTSD are treated in the same plan as the substance use.

Online and telehealth IOP

Quest offers secure virtual IOP for clients who attend from home, work, or while traveling. Telehealth removes barriers like commuting, scheduling conflicts, and limited local options, and sessions run on secure platforms with therapy and progress monitoring in real time. Virtual IOP is available across California and follows the same clinical structure as in-person care.

Morning, afternoon, or evening

PHP is the right level when symptoms need near-daily structure but not overnight care. IOP is the right level when you can hold work or school and need fewer hours. Both use evidence-based therapy and relapse prevention; they differ in time commitment and intensity. Many clients step down from our PHP to IOP, then to our outpatient program as they stabilize.

Where IOP fits in the continuum of care

IOP is the middle level in Quest’s continuum of care, which runs from a Partial Hospitalization Program to an Intensive Outpatient Program to an outpatient program. PHP is the most structured level, with five to six hours of treatment a day for clients who need close support but not an overnight stay. IOP steps that down to three to four hours a day across three to five days, for clients who are stable enough to manage daily life but still need substantial clinical contact. The outpatient program is the lightest level, a few hours a week for clients maintaining recovery independently. Many clients move through these levels in sequence, stepping down from PHP into IOP as they stabilize, then into outpatient care as they regain independence, while others enter directly at IOP when it matches their needs. Moving through the continuum lets clients reduce clinical hours gradually instead of ending treatment abruptly, and our clinical team recommends each step based on progress rather than a fixed timeline.

Case management in IOP

Case management is a built-in part of IOP at Quest, grounded in clinical evidence and aimed at turning treatment into daily progress. Working alongside your therapist, a case manager helps you set realistic goals and apply recovery skills to the practical parts of life: managing work or school, rebuilding relationships, handling daily stress, and planning for long-term recovery. This support keeps the clinical work connected to the world outside the program, which matters at the IOP level where clients spend most of the week living independently. Case management also helps coordinate care across the continuum, so stepping up or down between levels happens smoothly rather than as a hard break.

Healing beyond therapy: Activities

Alongside clinical hours, Quest runs a structured activities program that supports recovery through movement, creativity, and rest. Options include yoga, pilates, and meditation offered several times a week; music therapy and production; weekly podcast production for building communication and confidence; biweekly film and TV therapy that uses clips to prompt reflection; gardening and nature therapy; biweekly sound-bath relaxation; pickleball and ping pong; a quiet reading corner; a video-game lounge for social connection; guided journaling; and art therapy. These give clients ways to reduce stress and practice healthy coping between sessions, which supports the clinical work rather than replacing it.
